Thomas Howe wrote a post in his LOG about the New Voice of Presence. Despite I don’t agree with his premise:

Deep in the DNA of every living being grows an irrepressible desire to control and modify the world that surrounds it.

I think the exact opposite: in the DNA of every living being there is the instinct to adapt to the surrounding world, taking care only of their single lives. Anyway I do understand that he refers to the human desire to “be in control”, and from this point of view Presence technologies and services can help in satisfy this need.

The post is worth reading, especially in its description of the evolution of presence related to the telephone world.

One thing is absolutely true: presence as can be used today (some exceptions apply) is an old concept of being online/offline, and the future in the telecommunication world is in the ability for devices to easily interact with users sharing the more accurate and effective availability information.
